Friday Morning Haiku

Switch back on your brains
Pack your bags and make your lunch
It's Back-To-School time!!!!!!!

OMG I love this time of the year.  Though I am not going back to school myself, this time is still special to me. The mornings are crisp.  Coffee and tea can be hot again.  Pumpkin flavors are starting to show up.  Boots can soon be worn.  Scarves will slowly come out.  Crisps will be baked.  Cider will be drunk (drank?).

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH I seriously cannot wait for Fall, I am just so in love with that season!!!!!!!!!!!!

And it all starts with kids going back to school :)

Wild Dog's Gourmet Hot Dog Cart, Baltimore County

I am really loving this Food Cart/Truck thing going on in Baltimore!

The other day I finally went to the Wild Dog's Gourmet Hot Dog Cart!  After spending some time looking at the creative menu, I chose the Reuben Hot Dog ($4) - All beef 1/4lb hot dog topped with swiss cheese, sauerkraut and russian dressing.  This was so tasty and a great choice!!!  I loved this combination and happily sat in my car and gobbled it up.

I can't wait to try the other concoctions - I know the Baltimore Dog is really popular (hot dog with chili sauce, onions, cheese sauce and old bay) but I think I may get the Mexicana Dog - hot dog with salsa, onions, cheese, green chiles, and crushed tortilla chips!  It also seems like the menu is constantly evolving, which I really like!  Oh, and if you're not a hot dog fan, don't worry because there is also pulled pork available for purchase!

The location of the cart is posted on the website, but check the Facebook or Twitter page to see if there are any last minute changes.  Also, during the State Fair, the Wild Dog cart will be located outside of the York Road entrance- so look out for the truck if you want to bypass the overpriced fair food, and get some really delicious food for much cheaper instead!

Yay for food trucks!!!!!

Tomato Sandwich

I bought two tomatoes at the University farmer's market today anticipating lunches of tomato sandwiches for the remainder of the week.  I am not sure whether I want to do just homemade bread + mayo+ tomato and leave it at that, or if I want to get fancy and add a bit of cheese too.

Suggestions?

Today's Food Deals

Groupon

  • $12 for $25 at Cafe Hon

    • I went to Cafe Hon a LONG time ago for breakfast, I don't really remember too much about it though....of those who have gone more recently, what do you think about this place?  I know it always gets mixed reviews.

  • $9 for One Pound tin of Otterbein Cookies (usually $18.99)
    • Expires Oct 31, 2010. Limit 1 per person. Valid for gold tins only. Tax & shipping not included. Not valid with other offers. No cash back.
    •  Oh man, Dan LOVES these cookies.  Having a pound of these around the house would be sooooo dangerous.  Dangerously delicious I mean.....speaking of which........

Living Social

  • $25 for $50 at Dangerously Delicious Pies
    • Expires on 02/25/11. Limit 1 per person per visit. Not valid 11/19/10-11/25/10, and 12/18/10-12/25/10.  Valid at Baltimore location only.
    •  I've never eaten one of these pies before, but oh man do I want to. $50 seems like a LOT of pie though, right?  This place was featured on Road Tasted with the Neely's and ever since then I feel like a slice of the Steak, Mushroom, Onion and Gruyere pie would be perfection.

Delicious Things

0823_lunch01.jpg
I saw this picture on The Kitchn today and it immediately made me regret my boring lunch of a frozen meal.  I don't even know what half of the stuff in the picture is, but I am still sitting here salivating.

Before that, I saw this picture on Lovely Clusters and just wanted to weep in pure delight. I LOOOOVE Smores

After having an amazing week filled with the yummiest of meals, I am trying to eat "lightly" in order to balance things out.  The Blog world is not helping me out with my good intentions.

Friday Morning Birthday Haiku

It is my birthday!
Tonight we eat Afghan Food
at The Helmand, yay!

So today is officially my birthday, despite the week long celebration :)  Unfortunately for my waist line (but fortunately for this blog), I equate birthdays with FOOD, and so that is how I have been celebrating :)

I am SO excited about going to the Helmand tonight, I went a long time ago and I remember loving the food..but I have NO idea what I ordered.  I know that I need to get the pumpkin appetizer, but do you guys have any suggestions for the entree or dessert!?!?

The Dogwood, Hampden

 CARROT CAKE!!!!!!!!

For one of my birthday dinners (yes, I have already had multiple celebrations and my birthday isn't until tomorrow!!!!), my in-laws took me to The Dogwood in Hampden.  I couldn't WAIT to finally get to try this place (plus I used my Groupon!).  I love their commitment to local and seasonal ingredients!

We started with their complimentary brown bread with mango butter.  The brown bread almost had a cake consistency that I really enjoyed.  The mango butter was good, though I was expecting more of a mango taste, but it's basically butter with chunks of mango in it.  Overall - loved the freebie :)

I ordered the Grilled Teres Major Beef Tenders ($24) - celery root-sweet potato gratin, grilled mushrooms and shallots, cabernet demi glace.  The meat was sooo tender (no pun intended!), and I loved the creamy gratin.  Don't be nervous by the celery root - the real taste in the gratin is the sweet potato.  So basically, if you usually go for steak and love potato gratin - this is for you.

Dan ordered the Ancho Braised Grass-Fed Beef Short Ribs ($24) - green chile cornbread with sage, spicy braising BBQ juice, garlic sauteed greens and squash.  First of all, cornbread is such a great side, isn't it?  I need to make it more.  This cornbread was nothing short of fantastic in my mind.  Short ribs are a menu item that my eyes always seem to be drawn to - and these were DELICIOUS.  I looooved the sweetness of the braising liquid.  I'm so glad Dan allowed me to have a significant portion of his meal hahaha.

For dessert I ordered the Carrot Cake ($7 pictured above) that had a wonderful orange cream cheese frosting.  This WAS SO SUPERB.  I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Carrot Cake so much and I just couldn't get enough of this one.  It was extremely rich and chock-full of raisins and I really loved the orange flavor of the icing.  YUM.  And because I was celebrating my birthday dinner - they didn't charge us for it! How lovely is that!!!! :)

Dan ordered the Chocolate Chip Pound Cake with Salted Caramel ice cream ($7) from Taharka brothers (aka the best ice cream place EVER).  The pound cake was good, but nothing spectacular.  Though I have to say, it was the biggest slice I've ever seen!.  The ice cream was insanely good, just as we figured it would be.  MMMM soooo creamy and sweet and a little salty. MMMMMM.

Looking back, I had a spectacular meal and the restaurant itself was an absolute gem!  This is one of those restaurants that make you love Baltimore a little more.  It has the right amount of fun, chic-appeal, comfort, and local-ness to make it a wonderful Baltimore destination.

Oh yea, and I have to add that the service was spectacular.  Our server's name was Jackie and she was fabulous!  Also, they have their own parking lot behind the restaurant - so don't bother with street parking!

Cafe on the Square, Downtown

Cafe on the Square, an unassuming cafe opposite the University of Maryland Hospital, has become my go-to place for a quick lunch.

First of all, take a look at that picture - that's their regular chicken salad ($4.99).  That is a LOT of chicken salad!!!!  I got it on their signature sunflower seed bread (which tastes as good as it sounds) with golden raisins, celery and mayo.  I ended up eating half and keeping the rest for the next day's lunch because of the large portion.  It was VERY hard to stop eating, but I tried to think of how happy I would be the next day as I slowly wrapped up the second half.

I've tried The Bawlmer sandwich ($5.69) - Lean corned beef brisket, provolone cheese and grey poupon mustard on Rye bread.  This was a liiiitle too boring for my taste, but the meat was great, so I really can't say anything bad about the sandwich - it's my fault for picking something like this.

I've also tried their Turkey Powerhouse sandwich ($5.99) - turkey, lettuce, tomato, alfalfa sprouts, muenster cheese and honey mustard on the sunflower seed bread.  This breathes a little extra life into a normal turkey sandwich. Be aware that muenster is a pretty overpowering cheese - so make sure you like it!

My favorite meal to get there, however, is their Pasta Nicoise ($5.99) - White tuna, capers, black olives, snow peas, Parmesan cheese, mayo, basil and a lemon-herb vinaigrette dressing.  I would literally devour that everyday if I could (and if I didn't care about Mercury poisoning).  This is the best tuna pasta salad I've ever tried.  Yes.  That good.  I love the sweetness of the dressing and the crunchiness of the snow peas that matches well with the soft tuna. You can order it in the normal size (which is served on a bed of lettuce), but check to see if they have it in their side salad size as well ($2.19).  I personally find the side salad  enough for a lunch if I have something small on the side (yogurt/cookie/fruit). Speaking of which, they also have yummy baked goods as well - I got a thick chocolate chip cookie the other day and was perfectly happy with it.

They don't have all their pasta salads in the Cafe everyday, so if you're going for something particular, call to find out if they have it that day.  Or just stop by and grab another one anyway - I've heard great things about the Neptune's Delight pasta salad ($7.29) - jumbo shrimp, crab meat, fresh veggies, scallions and their lemon herb dressing.  I think that will be next on my list!

Groupon: $15 for $30 at Ethel and Ramone's

When I received this Groupon, I was very intrigued.  I've always heard great things about Ethel and Ramone's, but I just never really remember to go there.  Looking through their menu, though, it's a shame that I forget because I really have never had Creole food before. It would be wonderful to try Gumbo or Jambalaya from a place that actually may know what they are doing :)

Have you ever been there?  Are you getting the Groupon?

Expires in 1 year.  Limit 1 per table and must use in 1 visit.

Friday Morning Haiku

I do like mushrooms
On my burgers and steaks
Not in my garden!!!!!!

I woke up one morning this week and glanced down at my flower bed and saw TONS of mushrooms which had sprung up over night.  The whole day I was googling ways to get rid of them, and basically was told that there was literally nothing I could do except maybe dump wet concrete on top of those suckers.

After work, I cautiously walked up to my house and lo and behold my good friend the Sun had withered Mr. Mushroom and Co. into oblivion!!!!!  I felt so silly for getting worked up about it but at least now I know to just forget about them and let nature do it's thing.

RECIPE: Sweet Corn Ice Cream

Remember when I went to B&O American Brasserie and I tried sweet corn ice cream for the first time and LOVED it?  Well, I found a recipe!

But I am nervous.....maybe it won't be as delicious?  Maybe I loved the combination of the corn ice cream with the cherry upside down cake and ONLY that combination?

What do you think - would you make Sweet Corn Ice Cream or HAVE you made it?

Here's the recipe: Sweet Corn Ice Cream on The Kitchn (one of my favorite websites ever!)

JFX Farmer's Market Confession

I assuaged my guilt by buying myself some blackberries and a honeyloupe, but I think it's pretty obvious what Dan and I specifically came for...

TYLER FLORENCE AND GRAPES AND A RECIPE!!!!

ADORABLE GRAPE COSTUMES and TF after throwing the first pitch

Last night, the California Grape Commission and Chef Tyler Florence (who is celebrating his 15th year with the Food Network!!!) came to visit Camden Yards to generate awareness about healthy eating at ballparks – with California Grapes of course!

  ME WITH TYLER FLORENCE OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Tyler Florence threw out the first pitch, and then I was lucky enough to be able to meet him!  He was only able to stay for a short time, but he still had time to chomp down a ton of grapes and tell us what he was up to:
  • He has a new book coming out in October - Family Meal: Bringing People Together Never Tasted Better.  He said this was his biggest book to date, and yet it only took him about two months to put together!!!!!
  • He has a new show coming out The Great Food Truck Race which airs August 14th on the Food Network Channel.  Basically, seven REAL food truck teams try to sell the most food each week in a different town, and the one that loses will go home.  The one that stays afloat will eventually win a $50,000 grand prize!!!!  There is already a Season 2 in the works, and I am hoping that a few of our very best food trucks can be in the running :)
  • He will soon have 3 restaurants to take care of in California- one which has already opened: Wayfare Tavern, in San Francisco.  OMG it actually has a dessert menu!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Chef Florence, I know you did that especially for me.  Baked Alaska?  YES PLEASE!
  • He has his own WINE
  • Oh, and did I mention he has a wife and two kids?????????  This guy is BUSY BUSY BUSY!!!!!
  • He said that the next "big thing" after cupcakes is going to be Pies.  Mmmmmm.  I thought it was going to be the Macaron, but I'll take pies.  Oh yes, I will.
  • He also stopped by Chap's Pit Beef for lunch, which I thought was great and very Baltimore...though I may be making that up since I've never been there......what do you think?
Once Tyler (do you see that picture above?  That makes us on first name basis LOL) left to get back to his family, it was time to relax a bit and eat a ton more California grapes and try some hot dogs with Grape Relish.  What do you think - would you ever give up your pickle relish for grape relish instead?  I would urge you to try this - it's tangy and VERY refreshing.  I had it with no other condiments, though I was told mustard would go well with it as well.

I may have taken the worst picture of all time (I'm sure you've come to expect nothing but the best from me, right? hahahahah), but here is my lovely hot dog with the grape relish, the recipe for which follows:

Ballpark Dogs with Tangy Grape Relish
Recipe from:
California Table Grape Commission

Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: about 5 to 7 minutes

Tangy Grape Relish
1/2 cup each: diced red and green California seedless grapes
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1 clove garlic, minced

Ballpark Dogs
8 turkey franks
Whole wheat hot dog buns
Honey mustard
Tangy Grape Relish: Stir together first 6 ingredients (through garlic); set aside.

Ballpark Dogs: Grill sausages over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, turning occasionally, or until nicely charred and heated through. Place buns on grill, cut side down, and cook for a minute or so to toast.
Place sausage in buns and drizzle with honey mustard. Using a slotted spoon, top with grape relish.

mmmmm I munched on these all night.  No one needs to force me to eat delicious grapes!

This was a free event generously provided by the California Grape Commission.  No one paid me to tell you how much I loved the grape relish or TF - I just do!

Groupon: $20 for $45 at Restaurant Sabor in Lutherville

Yay! I picked up another Groupon$20 for $45 at Restaurant Sabor in Lutherville - what a great deal!  I've always wanted to go here, partly because it's super close to my house and partly because the menu always looks fabulous and different!

Sabor, which labels itself as a New American and Latino Restaurant, changes their menu seasonally, so here is what I would pick if I were to go there tomorrow:

APPETIZERS
  • Goat Cheese & Leek Tart ($9) - house salad, balsamic syrup I love leeks and don't eat them enough!
  • Halloumi Cheese ($9) - drizzled with honey, house flat bread, spicy nuts.  Sometimes I think honey is my Kryptonite.  Anytime it's drizzled over anything, I am powerless and must order it.

ENTREES
  • Classically Prepared Turbot en Papillotte ($26) - I recently discovered that I loved this fish, and any menu item that is described as "classically prepared" seems like a good choice for a first visit.
  • Grilled Churrasco Steak ($27) - Papitas fritas, chimichurri

DESSERT
  • I WISH THERE WERE A DESSERT MENU SO I COULD DROOL OVER IT :(

Here are some details:
This expires in a year, it's valid for dinner only and you can only use one Groupon per table.  Also, this is NOT valid during Restaurant Week.  If you so choose, it's a BYOB with a $5 corkage fee.

Friday Morning Haiku

I love sandwich week
hubby made delicious things
yum yum in my tum

On Sunday, Dan informed me that this week was going to be "sandwich week" and that he would take care of dinner every night.  I was SO EXCITED!!!!  I usually do most of the cooking, but when Dan cooks every once in a while he always produces the most delicious and thoughtful meals.  I was excited to see what Sandwich Week would bring.

Here it is so far:
Monday: Grilled Chicken with Caramelized Onions and Avocado
Tuesday: Turkey with Apples and Brie
Wednesday: Grilled cheese with fresh tomato and turkey
Thursday:  OFF, I was out at a very awesome event, which I'll tell you about later :)
Tonight:  Not sure!!!!  But I can't wait :)

This was a ton of fun and I have been especially loving the leftovers for lunch!!!! :)

Do you ever have a themed dinner week?  I want to have more themed weeks.....maybe an Indian week?  A British week?  An Asian week?  A No-Carb week?  :)

p.s. Don't forget to enter my $25 McCormick and Schmick's gift certificate giveaway here!  It will end at 11:59PM tomorrow!!!

Maisy's, Downtown

One night, some good friends of ours wanted to hang out for dinner, so we decided to find a place which was relatively inexpensive and that none of us had been to.  This actually proved harder than we thought.  I had recently read a review about Maisy's on Charles Street (here), and after some deliberation, we ended up going there.

For my dinner, I chose the California Chicken ($8.95) - Grilled chicken, provolone, avocado, alfalfa sprouts, tomato and red pepper coulis on a kaiser roll.  In all honesty, I did not like my sandwich.  The roll fell apart while I ate it, I didn't think the alfalfa sprouts worked well with the red pepper coulis.....and it was just kinda boring.  I ate half and that was enough for me.  I was disappointed...I LOVE taking food home! The sweet potatoes fries were good, though a bit overcooked.

Dan wisely chose the BBQ Chicken pizza ($12.95-14.95, I forgot!!) - a special for that night.  Now, I am not a fan of BBQ pizzas, mainly because I don't particularly care for BBQ sauce, but even I could tell that this was one fine pizza.  Dan LOVED it, and especially loved the corn, which I had never seen before on a BBQ pizza.  My friends ordered a Margherita pizza ($11.95) which I really loved - especially the really large chunks of Mozzarella cheese.   The pizzas are very thin, but they are very large and perhaps best for sharing.

They also offer $20 bottles of wine, which is really amazing, and I had a wonderful sauvignon blanc for $6.

Overall, despite my sad sandwich, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place.  The price and size of their pizzas are such a good deal and the atmosphere of the restaurant is so chill.  I loved the Christmas lights, which made the room look cozy, inviting, and quite romantic!   I could totally see people coming here, grabbing a glass of wine or a beer, and sharing an appetizer and pizza. That would be a great night!

B&O American Brasserie's New Summer Items

B&O American Brasserie loves to change up its menu for the season - which is great for us!  There are some really yummy new items on their dinner and brunch menu that you should definitely check out.  And don't worry, the favorites are still on there (HELLO Market Flatbread!)

Their Sante Fe Railway ($11) cocktail was STRONG.  You'll like this if you love tequila.  Unfortunately, I forgot what else was in the concoction other than apricot syrup, which was a lovely touch.

One of my favorite entrees was the Crispy Skin Maryland Rockfish ($25) - Served with Avocado-oxtail risotto, baby tomatoes and spicy pepper paint.  THIS IS SO GOOD.  The fish itself was excellent, but then add all the avocado awesomeness to it, and you find yourself in a happy place.  What a great pairing for such a lovely Maryland fish.

The Braised "Buffalo" Duck Leg ($19) with seared watermelon, napa slaw and tater tots was AWESOME.   There really is nothing like this meal.  The flavoring of the duck, though described as "buffalo" is actually more of an Asian taste....in fact it reminded me of the Peking Duck my mum used to make when I was younger.  The spicy and crispy tater tots are a nice touch against the sweet and cool watermelon. Just an incredible meal with incredible flavors.  GET THIS.  Seriously.

For dessert, the Cherry Upside Down Corn Cake with Corn Ice Cream was the besttttttttttt.  I loved this dessert.  First of all, corn ice cream is incredibly refreshing and I am surprised that was the first time I had ever tried it.  Secondly, the actual cake with the sweet corn was great.  There was popcorn served on the side, which I wasn't such a huge fan of...mostly because I was more interested in the cake + ice cream.

Some honorable mentions include:
Confit Duck Flatbread ($12) served with asparagus, cherries and foie gras.  This sounds very fancy, I know, but the flavor combinations work so well together!!!!  Each bite gives you some sweetness from the cherries and duck, and then the foie gras mellows it out.

Braised Veal Cheek ($10) comes in a skillet with sous vide potato, mache greens and creamed corn.  If you like short ribs, you'll love this veal cheek.  The meat is so tender!!!!  And don't even get me STARTED about the creamed corn!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have I tempted you enough? :)
Let me know what you think if you go!

Fleming's Happy Hour and Husic Vineyards

I had the opportunity to go to Fleming's to try some wines from Husic Vineyards.  Fleming's was hosting a wine dinner (along with the chef from Roy's), and they had invited some media beforehand to try some of the wines and meet the owners, Julie and Frank Husic.  I was super happy to try the wine and meet the lovely owners, even though jealousy was probably seeping out of my pores.  To live in Napa Valley and own a vineyard?  Oh, what a life!!!

Their wonderful wines were a treat, especially because they are definitely out of my price range.  I tried a  Chardonnay that I actually enjoyed (I am not usually a fan of them) and some wonderfully robust Cabernet Sauvignons.

I also got to try some of Fleming's Happy Hour Menu items. I had no idea Fleming's even had a happy hour, and a good one at that!  Their happy hour is "5 for $6 'Til 7pm" and they offer 5 wines, 5 cocktails, 5 appetizers all for $6 each!  Pretty ridiculous price!

(Please note - these pictures are not indicative of what a Happy Hour plate would be since it was feeding many people!)

I tried the Seared Ahi Tuna which was served with mustard and some thinly sliced ginger. This was great and seared to perfection.  I wish I had taken more hahahaha.

The Mushroom Ravioli was by far my favorite.  I loved the cream sauce with the woodsy mushroom flavor.  This was so luxurious.  I would definitely order this again and again and again....... In fact, I think this is also available as an entree as well.

Have you ever been to Fleming's for Happy Hour or dinner?  It looks like one of those great places that you would go to after a Graduation or for a big business meeting.
