According to HowChow, a Union Jack's Pub is opening in Columbia next week.
UM, I'm SO EXCITED RIGHT NOW.
I've never been to the Union Jack in Bethesda, but I don't care! I'm obsessed with anything British (does that mean I'm obsessed with myself? I don't know how that works), so that automatically means I will love this place with all my heart.
Please someone let me know what Union Jack's is like and whether there is enough British stuff in the place to tame my excited heart.
THANKS

I'm not that sure I would get your hopes up. Given the old saw that "British cuisine" is regarded as an oxymoron and that curry has taken over the UK the way Chinese take-out and pizza tool over some time ago here, what would expect there that would make you feel British? Haggis, tatties & neeps, and fried Mars bars? The beer is more British than most American places, but you'll find better British-style beer at the Rock Bottom brewpub right near the Bethesda Union Jack....
And I make the above cracks as a proud eater of chicken stovies, leg of lamb, and finnan haddie!
You are right, it definitely won't be the food that will transport me back to England - but I think I was hoping for the atmosphere. I am imagining a Village Pub type of atmosphere. I am going to be disappointed, aren't I?
The menu is an insult to England
LOL LOL I had never looked at the menu until now hahahahaha, well clearly this place is nothing for me to get excited over if I want a real English experience hahahaha
I just went to Union Jacks both Friday and Saturday night and it was awesome. I have not tried the food yet, but the atmosphere was amazing. It really did look like an upscale British pub. I go out to a lot of restaurants and Bars all over and this is one of the best bars I have ever been too!
James - Your post gives me hope! Did you go to the one in Columbia???
Yes I went to the one in Columbia. They play great music and the dance floor is really cool. The service was really good too! By far the coolest spot in Columbia! I didn't go their two night in a row for nothing. Only thing is they dont have any specials right now and the drinks are real expensive.
It's an upscale British pubstyle restaurant and the atmostphere is awesome, but they described their menu as American cuisine with British influence. I had their Newcastle BBQ ribs and they were delicious. They do have "UK traditions" (Bangers, fish & chips, UK breakfast, shephard's pie) and they have a good selection of draft beers and tons more beers on bottle, as well as a good wine list, but drinks aren't cheap. The service was good, but it took a while for the food to come out
Lane - I'm glad they clarified their menu like that, it makes MUCH more sense. Also, I love shepherd's pie SO MUCH, so I'm glad they have it! I don't think I should write this place off! Thanks!
