Baja Fresh, Timonium

Did you guys get your free burrito last night (with a purchase of a drink of course) from Baja Fresh? Well Dan and I did! We never go to Baja Fresh, so we thought this was a perfect opportunitiy to figure out what this place had that Chipotle didn't (or Moe's AND Chipotle, in Dan's case).

I'm not sure if you remember, but I have quite an unhealthy obsession with Chipotle. It's the one place I truly crave, and I am never dissatisfied with a meal from there. They can do no wrong in my culinary book.

So poor Baja Fresh has a lot to compete with. I decided, with the help of the server, to choose the Chicken Ultimo Burrito Bowl which comes with lettuce, Baja rice (whatever that means), grilled peppers and onions, cheese, and sour cream. They also give you chips with each meal. The bowl was a very good size, I never felt like I had to give up anything by choosing the bowl vs. the burrito. I liked the bigger pieces of lettuce at the bottom of the bowl, and the chicken had a good taste. The peppers and onions were grilled but not caramelized, so that added a nice crunch to the bowl. I wasn't THAT impressed with the Baja rice, especially since it didn't have that buttery and cilantro-y taste of Chipotle's rice. Overall, I really did enjoy my meal but I still could not imagine why I would choose this burrito bowl over Chipotle's.
Dan ordered the Burrito Mexicano which comes with chicken, rice, onions, beans and salsa. He said it was good- but REALLY plain. I must add that he didn't get beans with his, so maybe that made a difference? I'm not sure. Either way, I know he's not going to be choosing this burrito over Chipotle's.

So, thank you Baja for letting me try your burritos- they were very tasty and satisfying! I would definitely go if a friend wanted me to meet them there, but if I reallllly had a hankering for some chicken + rice + beans + salsa etc........I'm think you know where I would end up.
Although I have to say, I love that they give free chips and a variety of salsa choices. The fresh cilantro was a nice touch too- I used a whole cup full!

As of now, the Chipotle burrito reigns supreme in my mind.

I still want to try a few of the local Mexican restaurants around my area. Maybe I'll write about them!

The words culinary and a fast food burrito place should never intersect! That being said, for me Baja Fresh destroys all other places. Next time get the Dos Manos, its not on the menu and its enough to feed two people (or one me.)

OK, I agree, BUT you know that my love for it is so much that in my stomach Chipotle + Culinary DOES intersect :)
